Integrating Local History and Geography into Community-Based Social Studies Learning for Enhancing Students’ Cultural Awareness

Local history and geography provide meaningful resources for connecting Social Studies learning with students’ communities, environments, and cultural experiences. However, learning that relies heavily on generalized national content may leave students less familiar with the history, places, traditions, and cultural values of their own communities. This article aims to examine the integration of local history and geography into community-based Social Studies learning to enhance students’ cultural awareness. A literature review method was employed to examine recent studies on local content curriculum, place-based education, local history, geography, cultural awareness, and community-based learning. The findings indicate that connecting learning with local places, historical events, cultural practices, and community knowledge can make Social Studies more contextual and meaningful while strengthening students’ cultural identity, historical awareness, and appreciation of local diversity. Therefore, community-based Social Studies learning should integrate local historical and geographical resources through observation, field activities, interviews, cultural projects, mapping, and collaboration with community members.
